The Free Radical

The Free Radical is a UK based musical partnership between singer/song writer Adeola Johnson and producer Loz Cliffe, a musical departure from both parties previous genres of jazz, funk and hiphop. The Free Radical mixes Adeola’s Nico-esque song-writing style and Terry Callier-like harmonies with an ethereal, post-punk production.

Islington born Adeola went to school next to Wessex Studios were The Clash and The Sex Pistols recorded, she attended The Anna Scher Theatre School and Rambert and appeared in the 1991 critically acclaimed British drama film ‘Young Soul Rebels’. After a spell as a journalist on Soul Underground where she interviewed Fela Kuti, Roy Ayer’s and Jalal from the Last Poets, Adeola followed Family Function and Shake and Finger Pop to New York to sample the emerging house music scene. Adeola has collaborated and recorded with Carl Macintosh, Chris Franck of Da-Lata, and Hot-Chip.

Originally from the Midlands, whilst at art college Loz cut his teeth playing live bass guitar on the East London underground funk, jazz and hiphop music scenes of the mid-nineties, with cross-genre experimentation always at the heart of his activities. Whilst Loz played bass for the underground jazz act MOTIV, he produced two albums for the band, and went on to produce two albums for the Mike Hobart Quintet. Loz is also a founding member of the anotherwordmusic collective, which organised and promoted the seminal ‘jazz meets hiphop live’ nights at the Clockwork club in Islington. He is also a solo electronic musician, and a multidisciplinary digital creative.

“The Free Radical deliver big on their debut S/T E.P. The London based band’s sound falls someplace between the graceful side of My Bloody Valentine and classic Velvet Underground flair. Opening number “Orange Glow” is backed by a compelling rhythm and pulsating synth tones that compliment it’s striking dynamics and atmospheric vocal delivery, while the rich melodies that flow throughout “Wings” delve deep into the other worldly realms of shoegaze. The E.P.’s third and final track “Overcome” demonstrates a fine range of shimmering hooks and brilliantly colorful textures that cap off this E.P. in fine form. A fabulous release to help kick off the new year.”  – Custom Made Music, January, 2017

“Another new duo with a limited following is The Free Radical, the project of singer-songwriter Adeola Johnson and producer Loz Cliffe. Why this is the case is beyond our comprehension, especially after hearing their new single, “Orange Glow.” The song is for anyone who grew up listening to The Velvet Underground and Nico or My Bloody Valentine, as the duo have brilliantly merged the sonic landscapes of these two legendary groups. Johnson’s vocals are chilling yet captivating, echoing Nico or a more hazy version of Chrissy Amphlett. Cliffe’s production and guitar work are terrific, as he re-creates the soft delirium of MBV’s more controlled and scintillating numbers. And the melody on this track is incredibly infectious, and you’ll be whistling the tune well after it has finished and then unexpectedly coming back to it hours later. Now let’s hope this impression will extend to many more people because The Free Radical deserve our undivided attention.” –, January, 2017
